Karwar: With the seizure of liquor, gold and silver, cash and other items worth `3.76 crore after imposition of the model code of conduct, Uttara Kannada district stands fourth in the state in the seizure of unaccounted goods.
The Election Commission of India had announced the Lok Sabha election on March 10 and code of conduct had come to effect on the day itself. In the last 40 days, the police, Excise Department, flying squads and other officials have seized `32.45 lakh cash in different cases. This data has not included the Income Tax raid at a BJP leader’s residence in Sirsi and Siddapur which unearthed `82.7 lakh.
The district which shares its border with Goa is a hotspot for illegal liquor transport. The Excise Department has seized 32,734 litres of liquor worth `62 lakh. Apart from this, 11.5 kg of gold, silver and other valuable metals and gift items worth `53.87 lakh were also seized.
3,000 policemen to be deployed
To maintain law and order during the polling on April 23, the police will deploy 3,300 personnel, including Central Armed Police Force, State and District Armed Police. As many as 10 DySPs, 23 inspectors, 48 PSIs, 111 ASIs, 1,058 constables, 1,000 Home Guards and others will be deployed, said Superintendent of Police Vinayak Patil.
Special booths for women
There will be 11 ‘Sakhi’ booths dedicated to women voters in the district. These booths will of blue colour and women polling staff will be wearing blue colour saree as their uniform.
Two tribal booths
There will be two tribal booths at Kotemane in Yellapur taluk and at Karadolli in Haliyal taluk. To facilitate people with disabilities, wheelchairs have been given to all booths. Two booths for people with disabilities have been set up in Ankola and Mundgod taluks.
